Symmetrical

The sofa sits partially on the rug while the coffee table and two identical armchairs sit fully on the rug. The armchairs are placed on either side of the sofa with the coffee table centered between them on the rug. The distance between the armchairs and sofa to the coffee table should be the same to maintain the symmetrical look. The rug should have sufficient length to accommodate at least the length of the sofa and the depth of both armchairs.

Assymmetrical

The sofa sits partially on the rug while the armchairs and coffee table sit fully. The sofa is placed slightly off the rug on one edge to allow space for the armchairs to sit beside each other on the adjacent edge. The length of the rug should accommodate at least the length of the sofa and the depth of an armchair.

Symmetrical

Two identical sofas sit partially on the rug while the coffee table and two identical armchairs sit fully. Both sofas should sit similarly off the rug and the distance between them is determined by the size of the coffee table. The bigger the coffee table, the more the sofas need to sit off the rug. After placing the sofas, the armchairs can be placed at the same distance from the coffee table as the sofas. The length of the rug should accommodate at least the length of one sofa and the depth of one armchair.

Assymmetrical

Two identical sofas sit partially on the rug while the coffee table and two identical armchairs and coffee table sit fully on the rug. Both sofas should sit similarly off the rug and the distance between them is determined by the size of the coffee table. The length of the rug should accommodate at least the length of a sofa + ⅓ of the sofa depth + the armchair depth.

Symmetrical

The coffee table sits in the middle of the rug and the sofa and armchairs sit partially on the rug on its perimeter. The armchairs are placed on either side of the sofa, directly across each other. The distance from the sofa and each armchair to the coffee table should be the same to maintain the symmetrical look.

Assymmetrical

The coffee table sits in the middle of the rug and the sofa and armchairs sit partially on the rug on its perimeter. The armchairs are placed side by side, beside the sofa, and they may sit either partially on or fully off the rug. There should be sufficient allowance (at least 30cm) between the coffee table and sofas and armchairs. The diameter of the rug should accommodate at least the width of the coffee table + 60cm.

Symmetrical

The foot of the bed sits on the rug while the nightstands flank the bedhead. The rug is placed lengthwise (about 1m) under the bed so that there is sufficient footfall when getting in or out of the bed. 40cm or more footfall is recommended so the length of the rug should be at least the width of the bed + 80cm.

Assymmetrical

The bed and nightstand both sit fully on the rug. The bed is aligned to the length of the rug while the nightstand sits beside it. 40cm or more footfall is recommended so the length of the rug should accommodate at least the length of the bed + 40cm. Its width should accommodate at least the width of the bed and the width of the nightstand.

Symmetrical

The bed and nightstands sit fully on the rug, with the nightstands flanking the headboard. The nightstands may sit either fully on or fully off the rug, depending on the size of the rug.

Symmetrical

The bed sits partially on the rug where the bedhead is slightly off the rug. The nightstands flank the headboard and they sit just off the rug. There should be sufficient allowance at the foot of the bed of about 40cm and the edge of the rug should be visible from the corner where the nightstands meet the bed. 40cm or more footfall is recommended so the diameter of the rug should be at least the width of the bed + 80cm.

Assymmetrical

The bed and nightstand sit partially on the rug, with the majority of the rug extending outwards on the side of the bed with the nightstand. The diameter of the rug should be at least the length of the bed. While 40cm or more footfall is recommended, this setting is more flexible and more dependent on the room size.

Symmetrical

The table and chairs sit fully on the rug, with sufficient allowance (about 80cm) for chairs to be drawn out and sat in without catching the edge of the rug. The length of the rug should accommodate at least the length of the dining table + 160cm (if there are chairs at the end of the table). Otherwise, the width of the rug should accommodate at least the width of the table + 160cm.

Assymmetrical

The dining table, chairs and bench sit fully on the rug. The short edge of the table is aligned to the edge of the rug, with sufficient allowance (about 80cm) for the chairs to be drawn out and sat in without catching the edge of the rug. The bench requires less allowance (about 50cm). The length of the rug should accommodate at least the length of the table and/or the width of the table + the depth of the chairs + the depth of the bench + 80cm + 50cm.

Symmetrical

The table and chairs sit fully centred on the rug, with sufficient allowance (about 80cm) for chairs to be drawn out and sat in without catching the edge of the rug. Assuming that there are chairs placed all around the dining table, the width of the rug should accommodate at least the length of the table + 160cm.

The upright piano sits fully on the rug with visible allowance (at least 10cm) on either side of the piano. The chair should also sit fully on the rug and allow for slight adjustments towards and away from the piano. The length of the rug should be at least the length of the piano + 20cm.

The grand piano sits fully on the rug with visible allowance (at least 10cm) on both sides. The chair should also sit fully on the rug and allow for slight adjustments towards and away from the piano. The length of the rug should be at least the length of the piano + the width of the chair + 20cm.

Symmetrical

The upright piano sits slightly off the rug while the chair sits fully. The edge of the rug extends out from beneath the piano but it may extend from around the piano where the piano sits fully on the rug. In all permutations, the chair should sit fully on the rug and allow for slight adjustments towards and away from the piano. The diameter of the rug should be about the length of the upright piano.

The writing desk sits partially off the rug while the chair sits fully on it. The writing desk may be placed partially on or off the rug, depending on its legs and the amount of allowance for the chair. The chair needs to have sufficient allowance (about 80cm) for it to be drawn out and sat in without catching the edge of the rug. The rug’s length should accommodate at least the length of the desk and it should also have sufficient width to allow the chair to move freely, especially if it has casters.

Assymmetrical

The writing desk and chair sit fully on the rug. The writing desk is aligned to one corner of the rug while the chair placement follows the desk alignment. The chair needs to have sufficient allowance (about 80cm) for it to be drawn out and sat in without catching the edge of the rug. The length of the rug should accommodate at least the length of the table.

Symmetrical

The writing desk and chair both sit fully on the rug. The writing desk may be placed partially on or off the rug, depending on its legs and the amount of allowance for the chair. The chair needs to have sufficient allowance (about 80cm) for it to be drawn out and sat in without catching the edge of the rug. Symmetrical

The writing desk and chair both sit fully on the rug and the writing desk sits closer to the edge of the rug. The writing desk may be placed partially on or off the rug, depending on its legs and the amount of allowance for the chair. The chair needs to have sufficient allowance (about 80cm) for it to be drawn out and sat in without catching the edge of the rug. The rug’s diameter should accommodate at least the length of the desk and it should also allow the chair to move freely, especially if it has casters.

Assymmetrical

The writing desk sits slightly off the rug while the chair sits fully on the rug. The writing desk is placed off centre, to the top of the rug while the chair placement follows the desk alignment. The chair needs to have sufficient allowance (about 80cm) for it to be drawn out and sat in without catching the edge of the rug. The diameter of the rug should accommodate at least the length of the table.
